Potential revision of BOJ Act – Abe maintains the pressure

Kyodo News is reporting:

Shinzo Abe said Sunday his government … will consider revising the Bank Of Japan Act if the central bank does not adopt a 2 percent inflation target at its upcoming policy board meeting.

The next BOJ Monetary Policy meeting, the first for 2013, is scheduled for Monday, January 21 and Tuesday, January 22.

Abe tones down rhetoric on defence, not on economy

Incoming PM Shinzo Abe is toning down his hawkish defence rhetoric & policies:

Incoming Prime Minister Shinzo Abe decided Saturday not to station officials on the Senkaku Islands to avoid further aggravating ties with China, at least for the time being … LDP sources said Friday the party will also postpone a state-sponsored event in February intended to promote Japan’s claim to the Takeshima Islands controlled by South Korea

While he eases off on his hawkish defence views, so far there is no sign he is easing off on his views on fighting deflation.

Abe is also easing opposition to nuclear power:

The head of the Liberal Democratic Party repeated Saturday that he will consider revoking the ban on construction of new nuclear reactors after he takes office this week.
