Cyprus: fin min flying home after failed talks

Posted: 22 Mar 2013 12:04 AM PDT

so says reuters now

Cypriot Finance Minister Michael Sarris was due to fly home from Moscow on Friday after failing to win fresh support in two days of crisis talks with Russia on prolonging a bailout loan and a possible new financing package.

Talks with Russian Finance Minister Anton Siluanov broke up overnight without even an agreement to extend an existing 2.5 billion euro ($3.2 billion) Russian loan to the Mediterranean island, said two sources familiar with the talks.

Cyprus: talk that fin min says russia deal has collapsed

Posted: 21 Mar 2013 11:17 PM PDT

I’m not seeing it on my newswires but there are a few places ( and links from the chat room) reporting that Sarris has said his talks with russia have failed, and that was the reason for EUR dip just now

I’ll keep loooking around and report back

ForexLive Asia wrap: No news out of Europe today so the Asian timezone sat on its hands

Posted: 21 Mar 2013 10:01 PM PDT

The forex trading headlines for Asia trading today

  • ANZ NZ Job Ads (February) +1.0% m/m (vs. -0.6% prior)
  • Conference Board Australia Leading Index +0.2% for January (vs. -0.1% prior)
  • Japan's finance Minister Aso was reported as saying "It will take time for prices to rise", more or less reiterating what he said yesterday.
  • On the other hand, Japan's economy minister Amari said he hopes the 2% inflation goal will be achieved in 2 years
  • Japan PM Abe said he is not bound by 44 Tln yen cap on new bond issuance
  • MNI Flash China Business Sentiment Indicator for March 58.39 (vs. 60.98 prior)

It was the quietest day of a quiet week in the Asian timezone. EUR/USD had a 20 point range, drifting a little higher as we awaited further developments in Europe on the Cyprus situation. There was no new news from the Americas session.

GBP/USD, AUD/USD and NZD/USD all very, very quiet in tight ranges.

Yen crosses, too, failed to move; USD/JPY straddled 94.95 for pretty much the entire day.
